In the Indian academic scenario, Comparative Literature emerged as a discipline in the 1950s. The Academicians and Intellectuals in India realised the importance of Comparative Literature in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual society, and that led to the establishment of a full-fledged department of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University, Kolkatta in 1956. Since ‘Indian Literature is an internally constructed literary universe accommodating the diversities of experience and expressions of Indian people’, Comparative Literature can explore this complex, multi-layered and diversified nature of Indian Literature and culture. As it always upholds the ideological and political approach of inclusion and at the same, celebrates diversity as well. Along with the Russian Language, the Department upholds the real essence of Comparative Literature and creates a multidisciplinary academic environment.
